In November 2024, I had the immense honor of winning the Social Impact Award at the Women in Innovation (WINN) Awards in South Australia. This recognition not only celebrated our work at Continence Matters but also highlighted the transformative power of innovation in driving social change. As I reflect on this achievement, I am reminded of the critical role social impact plays in shaping a better future and how organizations like WINN foster innovation to address society's most pressing challenges.

Women in Innovation: Championing Change

The Women in Innovation organization is a South Australian initiative dedicated to supporting women who are breaking boundaries and driving innovation across diverse sectors. Since its inception in 2014, WINN has been a platform for showcasing trailblazers who create jobs, generate revenue, and tackle global challenges through innovative solutions. By fostering collaboration and providing recognition, WINN empowers women to push their achievements further while advocating for gender equity in innovation.

The annual WINN Awards celebrate these contributions by recognizing women who make significant impacts in fields ranging from science and technology to arts and social initiatives. This year’s awards ceremony was a testament to the incredible strides women are making in innovation, proving that creativity paired with purpose can lead to profound societal benefits.

Social Impact Through Innovation

Winning the Social Impact Award was a moment of reflection on the importance of addressing overlooked issues, such as urinary incontinence, which affects millions globally. At Continence Matters, our mission has been to break stigmas, raise awareness, and empower individuals through education and resources. Our website now serves over 60,000 visitors annually, providing essential information and support for those affected by this condition.

One of our proudest achievements is the production of An Incontinence Truth, a powerful film Round the Globe Film Festival Winner - Women's Issues, Texas, 2024. This film uses storytelling to shed light on an often-taboo subject while inspiring change. Such initiatives demonstrate how innovation—whether through technology or creative media—can amplify social impact and drive meaningful conversations.

The Role of Technology: Enhancing Stories with AI Film

While celebrating past achievements, I am excited about new opportunities to enhance our efforts using cutting-edge technology. Recently, I revisited my acceptance speech video from the WINN Awards night. Unfortunately, it was recorded on a mobile phone from a distance, resulting in poor video quality. However, thanks to advancements like Topaz Labs’ Project Starlight AI model, I was able to upscale a portion of the footage significantly.

Project Starlight represents a breakthrough in video enhancement technology. Using diffusion AI, it restores degraded videos by enhancing resolution, de-noising, sharpening details, and maintaining temporal consistency across frames. This innovation allows even challenging footage to be transformed into high-quality visuals without manual adjustments. By comparing the original footage with the AI-enhanced version on my blog post, I aim to showcase how technology can breathe new life into stories that matter.
